Husam Muslim is the 2019 Dieter W. Jahns Student Practitioner Award. Husam is a PhD student at the University of Tsukuba, Japan.
Congratulations to Husam Muslim, a PhD student at the Graduate School of Systems and Information Engineering, Risk Engineering Department, University of Tsukuba, Tsukuba, Ibaraki, Japan for winning the 2019 Dieter W. Jahns Student Practitioner Award. Husam’s major Professor is Makato Itoh. The award and the $1,000 check will be presented to Husam during the 2019 Human Factors and Ergonomics Society meeting in Seattle. A second $1,000 check was sent to Professor Itoh. Husam’ project, “Driver Interactions with Adaptive Collision Avoidance Systems: Effects of Multiple Steering Interventions on Driver Performance and Trust”, focused on the human centered design of automated driving systems.
The objectives of the study was: (1) to investigate how drivers interact with different levels of automation interventions used in situation-adaptive automation to support those drivers while making hazardous maneuvers; and (2) to determine the extent to which drivers’ trust and acceptance are affected by automation authority as well as the context encountered for designing usable and effective collision avoidance systems.
The main conclusion from the study “… is that the effect of automation intervention levels on human–automation interactions during dynamic control tasks is dependent upon humans’ ability to perform a task without automation support. This result suggests that, in order to improve humans’ interaction with automation, humans should possess sufficient skills for manually performing the automated task and operating the automated function, which may be achieved with appropriate interactive training for an accurate mental model and effective and safe human–automation interactions.”
